Good video.
I’m not so sure about the special tax. I think it might be just enough to discourage some from buying a bike. It has the scent of legislation that would be proposed by disgruntled motorists who feel that cyclists shouldn’t be allowed to use the roads.

That’s a good point, Ron. Don’t most cyclists also own cars and pay taxes already? I know I do. Also, we give tax incentives to purchase hybrid cars, why would we want to discourage cycling?
On the other hand, I do want better infrastructure and bike programs, but I’m not sure a tax is the way to go, either.

Good video, although I don’t think the target audience is going to be a candidate for a Fixie as a commuter bike! I have a Trek commuter and those disk brakes are the best invention ever for riding in the rain.
I might be willing to pay up a bike tax in exchange for infrastructure, but on the other hand I’m afraid that I don’t trust my government to (a) use the money wisely, or (b) administer it to the right places. Would it be statewide? Would that mean Seattle gets everything and my city gets nothing? Would it build more offroad trails which I don’t use, or fund education, or fund street-sweepers to sweep broken glass out of bike lanes … ? There are many questions to be answered before I would be able to get behind it. And, as has been mentioned, I pay big registration, sales, and property taxes on my car (which sits in the garage), so I feel that I’ve already paid my taxes into the system and those taxes should be funding bike infrastructure.

Thanks, Jennifer. I agree on the Fixie point. I included it because I thought people that are getting started might see some fixed gear bikes on the road or encounter them on the internet and wonder what they are. I was foolishly considering one when I first started cycling. I’m glad that’s not what I started riding on.
